Without semiconductors, our cars would still produce as much pollution as they did in the 1960s, because exact control and regulation of the injection and combustion processes has only become possible with the use of semiconductors. But engine management is just the beginning. In the meantime, cars have become full of electronics from the front headlights to the rear bumper, and this not only ensures less environmental pollution but also more safety and comfort. As part of driver information and assistance systems, radar and lidar sensors as well as cameras and ultrasonic sensors act as additional eyes and ears for the driver. For instance, depending on the version, different systems inform the driver while parking: ultrasonic sensors (parking beepers) provide information about the distance to other objects such as walls, vehicles, obstructions etc., while reversing cameras in the display now even show the driving curve as a function of the steering wheel angle and the bird's eye view of the vehicle is still more convenient. Some vehicles can even park completely automatically at the push of a button. These systems offer support and relieve pressure on the driver. Infotainment not only provides suitable music and navigation assistance but now also offers access to the Internet in more and more vehicles.
Greater power, improved road holding
In sports cars, semiconductors allow the implementation of particularly interesting concepts: electronics make it possible to build engines that produce even greater power, while at the same time the traction control system ensures that this power reaches the road particularly effectively. The user feels this through phenomenal acceleration. At the same time, the electronics is able to optimally adapt the damping of the vehicle to the road conditions, which significantly improves the road holding. The highest possible deceleration of sports cars is also produced with the aid of electronically controlled brakes (ABS).
More comfort by the use of electronic control
It is difficult to imagine our city streets without sports utility vehicles (SUVs) as they enjoy such great popularity. Only by the use of electronics were the automobile manufacturers able to construct comfortable vehicles in this size classification. A good example of this is the electronic control of the automatic transmission, while power-assisted steering allows the vehicle to be steered with minimum effort.

Semiconductors ensure efficient control of the traction motor, while not detracting from the fun of driving, depending on the implementation. The navigation equipment shows the route to the next available charging station, while the battery control of the integrated battery management system continuously provides up-to-date information on the state of charge.
